Septem contra Thebas (Graece: Ἑπτὰ ἐπὶ Θήβας) est Aeschyli tragoedia anno 467 a.C.n. Athenis acta, quae pugnam inter Eteoclem et copias Thebanas contra Polynicem et socios narrat. Ultima (ac sola relicta) pars est Oedipodioniae trilogiae.

Argumentum


Maxima pars tragoediae constat e sermonibus longis, quibus cives Thebani et Eteocles rex disputant de periculo sibi creato ab infesto exercitu, qui iam ad portas est. Quibus diverbiis patefiunt animus habitusque Eteoclis.

Unusquisque eorum septem, qui copias Argivas in septem portas urbis Thebarum duxerunt, et insignia cuiusque multis verbis exponuntur. Deinceps Eteocles singulos duces Thebanos Argivis attribuit. Ut postremus dux, qui septimam portam petit, Polynices, frater regis, apertus est, Eteocles reminiscens exsecrationis Oedipodis patris decernit ipse fratrem ad septimam portam impugnare et abit. Post carmen catervae nuntius procedit et profert in medium hostes quidem repulsos, sed Eteoclem Polynicemque invicem occidisse. Corporibus in scaenam prolatis cantu lugubri deflentur.

Quia fabula Sophoclea, quae Antigone inscribitur, maxime diligebatur, extrema pars Aeschyleae tragoediae rescripta est quinquaginta annis post mortem auctoris. Cum fabula ab Aeschylo conscripta desierit in maestitiam doloresque mortuorum fratrum, nunc continet extremam partem, quae quasi fabulam Sophocleam exorditur: Nuntius procedit et exclamat Polynicem humari vetitum esse; cuius soror Antigone profitetur se id edictum contempturam.
