Religio[1] (-onis, f.) sive res divinae[1] (-rum, f.pl.) est ordinata systematum opinionum, systematum culturae, cosmotheoriarumque congeries, quae humanitatem cum rebus sacris et aliquando moralitate coniungit.[note 1] Multis religionibus sunt mythologia, symbola, usus antiqui, et historiae sacrae quae significationem vitae dant vel originem mundi, originem vitae vel universi explicant. Ex notionibus cosmi et naturae humanae, religiones moralitatem, ethicas, leges religiosas, et modos vivendi antepositos deducere solent. Secundum nonnullas aestimationes, exstant in mundo hodierno circa 4200 religionum.[2]

Theologia est scientia quae deos investigat. Religio autem ipsa modum scientiae non sequitur, et a scientia permaxime distincta est, quod nos requirit conclusiones comprobare quae in experimentis verificari non possunt. Qui deos non exsistere putent, et religionis fidem negent athei appellantur.
