Designatio planetarum minorum duobus gradibus procedit: Cum nova corpora caelestia (ut puta asteroides) inveniuntur, primo "nomine ad tempus" appellantur, quod numeris litterisque constat. Hoc nomen praecipue inventionis diem secundum schema ab Unione Astronomica Internationali (IAU) constitutum continet. Postquam accurata huius corporis caelestis orbita exquisita et ab aliis observatoribus approbata est, ei, qui corpus invenerat, ius nominis proponendi est, quod nomen deinde ab IAU variis rationibus ductis publice datur.
